Gates to Thorndon Park
Now this gateway is the entrance to Thorndon Country Park North. Originally these were the gates to Thorndon Hall and its surrounding park. Each post is topped by the obligatory lion and there is a matching gatehouse on each side of the entrance.

Thorndon Countryside Centre in 1990
Then, as now the visitor centre is jointly owned by Essex County Council and the Essex Wildlife Trust. The centre is staffed mainly by EWT volunteers. Learn more about it at http://www.essexwt.org.uk/visitor_centres__nature_reserves/thorndon/ The reserve is managed by the Essex Ranger Service.

Open Woodland near Thorndon Countryside Centre
Most of the trees in the foreground are Birch. There are other trees beyond, including many mature oaks. It is possible to sit on the benches (bottom right) and watch Nuthatches in the trees.

Little Warley Common
This is the Northern end of Little Warley Common, near Heart's Wood. Little Warley Common was used for grazing until the late 1800's. There is now more than a hundred years worth of trees growing over it. However at the southern end there is still Image in other parts the grassland is maintained by mowing see Image The habitat is maintained by Brentwood Council.
