London express heading south from Hooton, 1966
Former LMS 2-6-4 tank engines were the mainstay of passenger working between Birkenhead and Chester, including the expresses to London Paddington. These trains had to reverse direction at Chester where a more obviously express locomotive would take over the train. Most of the expresses made the intermediate stop at Hooton to connect for Ellesmere Port, and 42657 is clearly making a spirited start from the station stop.
