St John the Evangelist Church and Lychgate
St John the Evangelist was built in 1879, thanks to donations from two men, Thomas Shallcross and Peter Owen. Designed by the 19th century architect David Walker, it was a typical English village church at the time with stone walls and slate roof. Originally part of the much older parish of Eastham, the population of Great Sutton was only around 300 at that time although along with its neighbour Little Sutton, both are mentioned in the Domesday Book.
