Narrowboat at Ellesmere Port, 1983
The main change between this view and the location today is that the yard on the left where the tanker lorries can be seen has been replaced by new housing.

A Green Canal
This boat looks like it's cruising across a lawn as it ploughs its way through a plague of duckweed on the canal near the waterways museum.

Weed at the Museum
Scanned from a print, so apologies for quality, but it's good enough to show the plague of duckweed that had filled the museum basins that summer. It was in all the locks and stretched several miles along the canal back towards Chester. And I promise you this is a true story....As we arrived, they had just pulled a woman out of one of the locks. She was standing there dripping and covered in weed. She thought the lock was filled in and grassed over, and had tried to walk across it. Dohhh....

Ellesmere Port Boat Museum
Apparently, the large bird in the foreground is a semi-mature Mute Swan cygnet (in its last throws of childhood). It was very large and intimidating, knocking on the car window. When I got out of the car, it tried to pinch my car keys! Thanks to Cyril Newsome for the identification.

The green, green grass - National Waterways Museum, Ellesmere Port
Oblique lighting makes the grass vivid and the buildings of the hydraulic power complex and Island Warehouse somewhat dull. I'm looking across the parallel sets of locks bringing the Shropshire Union Canal down to the Manchester Ship Canal.
