Signal box at the old Hadlow Road station
The old Hadlow Road station near Willaston on the line from West Kirby to Hooton, a branch of the Birkenhead Railway. This section of the line, together with the station, was opened in 1866. The station was closed in 1956, and the line in 1962. This station is the only one on the line where the buildings have been preserved (grade 2 listed) and operates as a visitor centre. In 1973, the whole length of the old railway was designated as the "Wirral Way", part of the Wirral Country Park, a traffic-free route for walkers. Use of the path was subsequently extended to cyclists and horse-riders. This section of the Wirral Way is designated National Route 56 of the National Cycle Network.
