One of the few remaining large Victorian houses in Noctorum Lane, built for Liverpool shipowners and businessmen in a style succinctly described by Pevsner's Birkonian colleague, Edward Hubbard, as "very large and very red". This house is one of four that were constructed in the mid 1960s after the demolition of the Victorian house, Chenotrie, which used to stand here. The lawn depicted here was the croquet lawn of that former mansion -- an indication, perhaps, of the standard of living of the Victorians who lived there!
