Wirral and Mersey Special at Green Lane, Birkenhead ? 1966
'Crab' 42942 has just backed onto the train ready to continue on the final portion of the tour. On the right the electrified lines of the former Mersey Railway to Liverpool are diverging into Green Lane Station. Only those tracks now remain, the lines to Woodside Station and Birkenhead Docks (where the train is heading) have completely disappeared. The idea of passengers being allowed to leave the train at a location like this, let alone to climb a signal post to get a picture is completely alien to modern health and safety regulations, but I am not aware of injuries occurring on this or the scores of other railtours which took place during this period.

Sandstone wall in Queen Street, Tranmere
This old sandstone wall surrounds the grounds of the public house "The Old House At Home". There is a very weathered Ordnance Survey benchmark on the corner of the wall: Image

Wall corner and the ghost of a benchmark in Queen Street, Tranmere
The faintest shadow of an Ordnance Survey benchmark is still just visible on the third stone up on the corner of this old wall. The wall surrounds the grounds of the public house "The Old House at Home". The mark can be seen more clearly if the viewer looks back to the Google Streetview of August 2019.
