Stanier 8F 2-8-0 at Birkenhead Locomotive Depot
Looking splendid after a Works visit and still in LMS livery, No. 8660 poses in the Yard. It was built for the LMS by the SR at Eastleigh in 1944 and was employed on the LMS and BR(LMR) until transfer to BR Western Region in the 1950s, on which it remained until withdrawn in 6/65. (See Image] for Depot details).

End of platform, Birkenhead Central Railway Station
The somewhat unkempt appearance at the southern end of the station. Signal ML715 remains on red. Mollington Street road bridge is in the background. The tracks, to the left, branch off to the carriage shed. To the right-hand side, the wrong end of the Liverpool-bound platform is visible.

Rock Retail Park, Birkenhead
The Rock Retail Park, as seen from the tower of the St Mary's Church nearby. Each store at the development has unusual towers built near their entrances to reflect the maritime traditions of the area. The towers are designed to resemble the cranes used to build ships.

Birkenhead Central Station ? 1968
A six car train, made up of two standard 3-car sets, on its way to Liverpool Central. The leading car is one of the original series built by the London Midland and Scottish Railway in 1938 when the West Kirby and New Brighton lines were electrified. Further sets to the same design were built by British Railways in 1956 to replace the original Mersey Railway stock. Both builds were later classified by British Rail as Class 503. They remained in service until 1985. The large building to the left was the main train storage depot for this section of the line.

Mollington Street motive power depot, Birkenhead ? 1965
This was the main Birkenhead depot, provided locomotives for both passenger services and the heavy freight traffic out of Birkenhead docks. A variety of locomotives can be seen in this view. Centre stage is 42968, one of the 2-6-0 locomotives designed by William Stanier soon after he moved to the LMS Railway. This particular locomotive has survived into preservation as the sole survivor of the class and is currently (2021) at the Severn Valley Railway https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2440423
