Tower of Holy Cross Church, Birkenhead
What Edward Hubbard describes as the "overscaled toy fort" tower of Francis Xavier Velarde's now-abandoned 1959 Image presents an almost Mediterranean aspect against the bright blue sky of a bitter winter morning.

Holy Cross Church, Birkenhead
This church at the corner of Hoylake and Worcester Roads was designed by Francis Xavier Velarde and opened in 1959. Pevsner's collaborator Edward Hubbard found the interior with its apsidal sanctuary "not without merit" but was nonplussed by the exterior with its "overscaled toy fort tower". Sadly, in 2006 the Diocese of Shrewsbury decided to close the church and two years later it was put up for auction. Plans to convert the tall nave into a school for trapeze artists were blocked by restrictive covenants forbidding use of the building for non-religious purposes. Holy Cross is listed Grade II - see Taking Stock https://taking-stock.org.uk/building/birkenhead-holy-cross/
