Hamilton Square, north side
Built as residential, the square has been taken over by offices for many decades. It was developed as the heart of William Laird's new town of Birkenhead, but outside the square developers were unable or unwilling to afford the sumptuous classical style of architecture and it remains an island of classicism in otherwise mundane surroundings.

Hamilton Square, Birkenhead
Hamilton Square was designed and built in the 19th Century. Building started in the 1820s, but it took 20 years to complete. The land had been bought by William Laird, a Scottish shipbuilder who opened a shipbuilding yard in Birkenhead. The Georgian architecture is similar to that found in Edinburgh's New Town.

Probably by Walter Scott, 1847. The ground floor has been ruined. One of a few extant fragments of William Laird's planned "stone city". Grade II listed.

Hamilton Street, Birkenhead
Hamilton Street leads from Hamilton Square towards the River Mersey, past Birkenhead Hamilton Square station. The station platforms are deep underground and accessed by lifts. The railway is in tunnel as it passes beneath the Mersey to reach Liverpool.

Signs old and older
I'm not sure when the free-standing sign was erected but my guess is that it is around 50 years old! The message is however more or less the same as the old painted one which must date from before the second World War. Clearly the window was sealed up to allow the message to be completed, but subsequent restoration has restored the original opening.
