Hamilton Square Railway Station, Birkenhead
The main railway station in Birkenhead - part of the Birkenhead-Liverpool underground loop line 'Merseyrail'. The Mersey rail tunnel was built in 1886. Later on, passenger numbers declined due to the pollution from the steam engines. In 1903, this was the first railway in Britain to convert from steam to electric, ensuring its success.
In recent years, it acquired fame due to a family of peregrine falcons nesting on a parapet.

Ghost sign on Hamilton Square station
This advertising ghost sign is on the ventilation shaft above Hamilton Square Merseyrail station. The text is partly missing so it seems that the large opening was once in-filled. When complete the text would have read:

Hamilton Square Station, Hamilton Street, Birkenhead
Dominated by its prodigious tower which, as well as being eyecatching, is (or was) functional as it provided water pressure to power the hydraulic lifts. Built in 1886 by G.E. Grayson for Mersey Railway. Grade II listed.
