In harmony - Llandow
Plants of many varieties grow in profusion beside a field of maize on an industrial estate that was once a busy RAF airfield. The field would once have been of quite closely mown grass across which war time aircraft such as Lancaster bombers, Spitfire, Hurricane and Mustang fighters would have been seen from the nearby Air Traffic Control tower.

Sign for Llandow Trading Estate
The sign in an elegant Art Nouveau typeface probably once looked smarter than it does now. This estate seems to have lost out to the Vale Business Park nearby. It's not clear which is the 'Llandow Retail Park' Image

Himalayan Balsam or Poor Man's Orchid - Llandow
Many clumps of this relative of the Busy Lizzie can be found along the hedgerows of the industrial estate located on this old airfield. Although a very attractive plant with a variety of potential applications it threatens native species in its capacity to totally overwhelm them with its invasive nature.

Himalayan Balsam or Poor Man's Orchid and bee - Llandow
This plant produces copious amounts of nectar and is thought to draw pollinating insects in preference to native plants. This reduces pollination of the naturally occurring plantlife thereby adding to the problems the plant causes. But who could begrudge long suffering bees the opportunity to feed in the dismal weather of the summer of 2009?
