The small whirlpool that can be seen is due to an aeration system that has been installed in order to maintain a high level of dissolved oxygen in Cardiff Bay. Compressed air is pumped through a series of sunken pipes and diffusers, enabling the surface water with a high oxygen level to mix with the deeper water that may have low oxygen levels.
