Griffon on gate pillar, Insole Court
This carved stone griffon adorns a pillar at the top of the south carriage drive to Insole Court, the tower of which can be seen in the background. This house has a complex history, and was remodelled between 1873-78 in a Gothic style popularised by William Burges' work nearby at Cardiff Castle and at Knightshayes Court in Devon (now a National Trust property). The house is currently owned by Cardiff City Council, and has an active Friends group that is working to ensure the house and grounds are maintained and used for the local community - http://www.insolecourt.org.uk
