The streets off Clifton Street, to the east, are all called after precious and semi-precious stones - including pearl in this description.
Some of the houses in Diamond St have the original stone facades, others have been replaced with brick.

A fire gutted a former cinema on Pearl Street in Adamsdown, Cardiff, on 22nd February 2015; the building is now being demolished. It was built in 1913, opening as Splott Cinema, later becoming a bingo hall and most recently a Christian Centre. Proposals were made to erect apartments on the site, but the plans were later withdrawn.
