Former church of St James the Great, Cardiff
Located on the corner of Newport Road and Glossop Road, opposite City Road. The church served Tredegarville and the Newport Road area from 1894 until closure in 2006. The multi-storey building behind it is Admiral House. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2351704

St James the Great, not so great now
One of Cardiff's more prominent churches, St James the Great (1890) is no longer welcoming worshippers. The impressive spire was in line to have a multi-floor apartment built in it after the church was sold off in 2006. However, the general rubble marks this poor building's appearance. See Image] for another view. Update (2018): the local council has granted permission for conversion to residential use, after business uses were thought unworkable. The plans are for sixteen apartments, including renovating the spire as a living space.

Tower entrance
St James the Great church is now shut to worshippers. The original building was an iron version, now replaced by this striking and strident stone site. It held services here from 1890 until 2006, but the outlook for it seems unlikely to continue with religion. The Grade II church was sold at auction in 2007 for £500,000 and plans drawn up to create a seven floor apartment in the spire, no less. However, it is still derelict and vacant today. Above the doorway on the right is a small carving of St John the Baptist. See Image] for another view.

Church in the round
St James the Great casts a large shadow over the surrounding area, with its massive spire and this circular apse. Sadly the church is now a site in need of new life. See Image] for another view.
