Helions Bumpstead
Looking towards St Andrew's Church from the crossroads in the village centre, nearly fifty years on from Ben Brooksbank's photo of the same view http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1744122 The changes are few and relatively subtle. An array of signs has appeared on the opposite corner: a traditional-style fingerpost, a decorative village sign http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1763961 a plaque celebrating a Best-kept Village award and a plan of public footpaths in the parish. On the right a bus shelter and litter bin have appeared and the cars parked in the lay-by are no longer British marques! The telephone cables have been laid underground but the power lines are still overhead. The elaborate contraption on top of the church tower has gone. And of course the pre-Worboys "bend" sign in Church Hill has given way to the modern standard. For a similar view eleven years later see Glyn Baker's Image

Helions Bumpstead: up Church Hill
Just after 10.30 on a sunny August morning. The parish church's red-brick tower was completed in 1812. For comparison, see the late Ben Brooksbank's Image], taken nearly sixty years before.

Interior of St Andrew's Church
The 13th-century chancel is the oldest part of the church. The arcade to the south aisle is 14th-century, but altered in the 16th when the clerestory windows were introduced; and the large clear windows in the south wall, which make this church so light inside, were renewed in 1812 when the tower was built. The present layout dates from 1924, when the old box pews were removed. Arthur Mee, who surveyed Essex in 1940, found this church "a symphony in green". St Andrew's is listed Grade II* https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101338347-parish-church-of-st-andrew-helions-bumpstead

Pulpit and organ
The organ in St Andrew's Church was moved down from the west gallery in 1924 and placed alongside the pulpit which it complements nicely, both being in the attractive "Churchwarden Gothick" style of the early 19th century. The instrument was built by J.W. Walker of London in 1851, which suggests that it may have been purchased from the Great Exhibition of that year.

Sanctus Johannes
Stained glass of 1850 in St Andrew's Church, in memory of the Revd John Hodgson, a vicar of the parish who died at "St Leonard's on the Sea". The saint is presumably John the Evangelist, as he carries the book of his Gospel and his symbol of an eagle appears above.
