The end of Centre Drive, Newmarket
Centre Drive bisects the two roads leading out of Newmarket that lead to Cheveley (Ashley Road) and Saxon Street (Duchess Drive). It was once the driveway to the mansion that is now the headquarters of the Cheveley Park Stud. This mansion was built in 1892 by Colonel McCalmont, where he used to entertain his good friend the Prince of Wales. Centre Drive is now occupied for much of its length by a hotchpotch of houses and bungalows, all built without any apparent overall plan. This view is of the end of the tarmac road, where it is succeeded into the parkland by a track. Further into the park the drive is lined with a magnificent double avenue of limes.
