Bus reversing out of Newmarket bus station
The 312 to Bury St Edmunds reverses (with the aid of a banksman, hidden behind the bus in this shot) out of Newmarket Guineas bus station onto Fred Archer Way. Usually, buses are able to leave the bus station forwards, but when this picture was taken the exit road was being resurfaced, so buses had to leave via the entrance. A banksman was stationed in the bus station at all times to assist with this and to manage the conflicting movements created.

Newmarket Guineas bus station
A view across Newmarket Guineas bus station from its exit road, which was closed for resurfacing when this picture was taken, hence the traffic cones in the foreground. Having a single passenger shelter, and capacity for only two buses to load or unload at a time, this is a facility for which the title "bus station" is perhaps rather grand. The cars behind the fence are in a surface car park, while a low rise multi storey facility serves the same purpose in the background. The canopy that has crept into the right hand corner of the frame is attached to a covered shopping centre which, if memory serves, lends its name to the bus station.

Interior of Our Lady & St Etheldreda's Church
With its pale brick masonry and stone facings this is a 1966 reinterpretation by John Baptist Sebastian Comper of a traditional basilican interior, only its uncluttered simplicity and the forward position of the altar acknowledging modern liturgical practice. The fittings above the spandrels of the round arches, which suggest plinths to support statues of saints, in fact conceal electric lighting.

Our Lady & St Etheldreda's Church
The most prominent church in Newmarket, on a prime town centre site between the bus station and Waitrose, and grander than any of its Anglican neighbours. Our Lady Immaculate and St Etheldreda was designed in 1966 by [John Baptist] Sebastian Comper, son of the great Sir Ninian. It was not yet standing when Pevsner recorded the town's churches in 1961 (acidly commenting that they "can indeed be considered last") nor did Enid Radcliffe deign to mention it in her revision of 1974. Architecturally a basilica in the popular Tuscan revival style of its generation, the church is entered by a western narthex beneath the rose window. The unusual effect along the roofline is a reflection of the sky and clouds. For the interior see

The church of Our Lady Immaculate and St Etheldreda was designed by John Baptist Sebastian Comper in 1966 in the Tuscan revival style of the day. The baptistery with its octagonal roof projects from the north side of the church. The material of the roof ridge reflects the blue of the sky. For the interior see
