The Statue of Garfield (Garfy / Mr. Sainsbury's)
This bronze statue commemorates Garfield, a ginger tom cat who became a cherished local celebrity in Ely, Cambridgeshire. He achieved local fame for his frequent visits to the Sainsbury's supermarket on Lisle Lane. He became a fixture, often seen lounging in the entrance or sitting in shopping trolleys, delighting customers and staff. His antics earned him media attention and the nickname "Mr. Sainsbury's." He had a large social media following and was the star of two books.
Sadly, Garfy died in 2019 after being hit by a car. Following his death, his owner, David Willers, led a successful public fundraising campaign which raised nearly £7,000 to commission the permanent memorial, ensuring the beloved cat's legacy lives on in the city.
Subject: Garfield (known affectionately as Garfy or Mr. Sainsbury's).
Artist/Sculptor: Sally Dunham, a local artist based in Soham.
Date Unveiled: October 14, 2023.
Description: The life-size bronze statue is positioned next to a memorial bench, which encourages visitors to sit and reflect. The bench is inscribed: "In loving memory of Garfy. Sit and relax for a moment with me."
