The Cavendish Laboratory
The Cavendish Laboratory was the home of some of the great discoveries in physics. It was founded in 1874 by the Duke of Devonshire (Cavendish was his family name), when its first professor was James Clerk Maxwell. In 1974 the department moved to new premises.

Balfour Building, New Museums Site
Despite appearances, this building actually has four floors inside. The bridge connecting it to the adjacent Phoenix Building runs through the largest tree on the site. The Balfour Building is also where I work.

Cows about Cambridge 13: The Moostery Sculpture
Artist Laura-Kate Chapman; sponsor & location University Museum of Zoology.
"This isn't a cow! As scientists worldwide investigate the environmental impact of cattle, we were given the chance to include an animal on the trail that represents both our collections and the incredible conservaton work taking place in Cambridge."

Laboratory of Physical Chemistry, Cambridge
Detail above the entrance of this Grade II listed building, in Free School Lane.
"Brick buildings on the site of the Perse School and incorporating the hall of circa 1600 (on account of which the item is listed) with fine hammerbeam roof of five bays with pierced spandrel decoration and enriched braces and pendants. The roof has been ceiled below the rafters, and a floor inserted for the library."

Mond Building, New Museums Site, Cambridge
Paid for out of a bequest by Ludwig Mond to the Royal Society, and opened as an addition to the Cavendish Laboratory on 3 February 1933 (detailed report in the Times Digital Archive for next day). Initially used for Kapitza’s research into intense magnetic fields. Since the Cavendish moved to West Cambridge in the early 1970s, the building has been used by other University departments.
