Paid for out of a bequest by Ludwig Mond to the Royal Society, and opened as an addition to the Cavendish Laboratory on 3 February 1933 (detailed report in the Times Digital Archive for next day). Initially used for Kapitza’s research into intense magnetic fields. Since the Cavendish moved to West Cambridge in the early 1970s, the building has been used by other University departments.
