The High Street, Newport - with Monks Barn
Along the High Street there are brick-built Georgian houses and early timber-framed ones - both in good numbers. Here, the timber-framed building in the middle of the picture is known as Monks Barn - a Wealden-type house of 15th century origin. Beyond it is a long, low weather-boarded building, and then a Georgian house with gambrel roof. Just by the way: the building nearest the camera seems to be displaying a barber's pole - not that often seen these days.

Oriel window, Monk's Barn, Newport
Professor Pevsner has this to say: 'On the left an upper (renewed) oriel the coving of which is carved (badly) with a demi-figure of the Virgin and two ministering angels'. ('The Buildings of England: Essex', Pevsner, revised Radcliffe).

Monk's Barn, Newport High Street
A well-known building, and a notable Essex example of the so-called Wealden plan, with the upper storey jettied out at either end, leaving the centre recessed. Grade II* listed: http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-410775-monk-s-barn-newport-essex
