Bowness on Solway: eastern end
This is where the road from Port Carlisle enters Bowness Village. Shore Gate House, the first house on the right, is an old corn mill dating from 1684 and now offers bed and breakfast accommodation.

Sea defences, Bowness on Solway
Bowness is built on a small hill and at this point the Solway at high tides is cutting away the small cliff. However these defences themselves are beginning to collapse. Will they be repaired or will Bowness be eventually abandoned to a rising sea ?

Hadrian's Wall Pavilion, Bowness on Solway
This unusual shelter on the Solway shore marks the start (or end) of Hadrian's Wall Path - a national trail. It is 84 miles from here to Wallsend and the plaque wishes walkers: 'good luck go with you'.
