Benchmark on Causeway Cottage on SW side of A6
Cut mark benchmark at location where Ordnance Survey documents indicate that a mark was levelled at 268.786 feet above Liverpool Datum during the 1841/4 1GL Liverpool to Port Carlisle Survey. The surveyor's description was: 'No. 448. Mark on corner of stable opposite the Horse and Jockey Inn ; 3.52 ft. above surface'

A6, Causeway House
The A6 between Penrith and Carlisle is an example of a major road from the 1960s, before the motorway. There are many lengths with extra lanes as with the hill here. It is also a Roman road.
