Shops at the bottom of Scotch Street
The Save the Children shop (grade II listed http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/Details/Default.aspx?id=386846&mode=adv ) is a detached building, separated from the fish restaurant by a short passageway called Longcakes Lane. This is a reminder of the many old lanes which ran between Scotch Street and Lowther Street, demolished in the 1980s to build The Lanes shopping centre.

Scotch Street (east side) ? The Lanes - February 2018 (5)
On the corner of Scotch Street and Longcakes Lane, this building certainly survived the 1979-80 demolitions. The 1866 OS Map shows it as "Spirit Vaults", while a recently unearthed period photograph clearly shows the building as "Ismay's Vaults", acquired by the Scheme on 1 August 1916 with the name changed to "Market Tavern" on 2 November 1916. The pub appears to have closed circa 1924.

A plaque on the sculpture reads as follows...
"This sculpture by Judith Bluck FRBS
of Jimmy Dyer, a well known
itinerant fiddler and ballad singer,

Junction of Scotch Street and West Tower Street
Ordnance Survey documents indicate that a benchmark was levelled at 59.552 feet above Liverpool Datum during the 1841-1844 Liverpool to Port Carlisle 1GL Survey on a flag at this junction. The surveyor's description was 'Branch Levelling from Mark No. 471. Mark on flags, at junction of Tower-street and Scotch-street ; level with surface'. The junction has been remodelled since then.
