The Carlisle Canal ran from here to Port Carlisle http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/933220 . It was only open for 30 years (1823-1853), then it was filled in to become a railway line. For history, see http://www.canalroutes.net/Carlisle-Canal.html . Some of the original buildings at the canal basin, including the bonded warehouse and customs house, survived until the mid 1970s-early 1980s. The Port Road Business Park was created on the site, and now only the gatehouse remains. McVitie's (formerly Carr's) biscuit factory is behind the house, with the Jovial Sailor pub on the right.

One of Carlisle's pubs subject to the State Management Scheme during World War 1. Nearly half the existing public houses were closed, while the rest were radically ‘improved’. The first references to the Sailor pub appeared in 1837 and its name relates to the close proximity of the nearby ship canal (1821-1853). The original pub was bought by the Carlisle Brewery Company in 1902 and demolished. The present Jovial Sailor built and opened in 1904. The exterior of the pub was little altered during state management days apart from the sills being raised on the arched windows to prevent passers-by being able to see in. https://thestatemanagementstory.org/ There is another photo here Image

The name of this pub dates from the time when Carlisle had a ship canal - the basin was maybe 200m left of this location. An old painting http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/paintings/carlisle-canal-basin shows some quite large sailing vessels, which were towed here by horses from the other end of the waterway at Port Carlisle Image . The Carlisle Canal was operational from 1823-1853, it closed for economic reasons and was replaced by a railway. The present pub was built around 1903, on the same block as the original Jovial Sailor, which was demolished (information from Carlisle Breweries and Public Houses 1894-1916 by S.Davidson http://www.p3publications.com/page23.htm ).
