The water tower at Appleby station
Ribblehead station was opened by the Midland Railway in 1876 on the Settle & Carlisle line. From 1952 to 1968 the station was called Appleby West, the older Appleby East station being nearby on the Eden Valley Railway. The buildings of Appleby East still survive. It was the only station between Settle and Carlisle to remain open throughout the life of the line up to the present day. More about the station can be seen at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appleby_railway_station This was a Sunday afternoon when 45690 ‘Leander’ was taking a southbound Waverley steam special from York over the Settle & Carlisle Line. It waited here for about ten minutes which was a good opportunity for photographs. Beyond the foot crossing is a water tower in the maroon colours of the Mdland Railway.

6201 Princess Elizabeth at Appleby
The station scene with the Railway Touring companies 'Cumbrian Mountain Express'. This was my first rail tour from Doncaster to Carlisle and return (diesel return). The engine was LMS (4)6201 Princess Elizabeth. Appleby is the watering point on the line so a quick 20 minute stop was required.

Silver spotters at Appleby
Trainspotters (including myself) used to be teenage boys. Now we are middle aged, and like the nostalgia of steam travel on charter trains such as this Image

Railway scene at Appleby
The water tower is not the original one on the site, it was installed in 1991 to service steam specials (Visit Cumbria http://www.visitcumbria.com/carlset/appleby-station/ ). The wagon is an I.C.I. salt van built in 1941 (More information at Vintage Carriage Trust http://www.ws.vintagecarriagestrust.org/ws/WagonInfo.asp?Ref=7518 ).
