You have been warned!
Gateway at the NE end of Hilton village where the track for Scordale and Swindale enters MOD ranges. Taken on one of the few days each year when the area is open to walkers. The map shows two parallel bridleways here, the upper being across squelchy ground [as we found], whilst the lower is a nice firm track.

The Cottage and barn at Hilton
Hilton is a small, attractive village at the foot of the steep western slope of the northern Pennines; it's unfortunate that it's also perhaps the closest settlement to the MOD's Warcop Firing range with 'live' artillery firing occurring on most days of the year. No danger of course but the noise must be aggravating! The small cottage is actually named 'The Cottage'; it's on the north side of the road.

Village pump, Hilton
Not so sure that the term 'pump' is correct here as this stone pillar with handle and tap is part of the village's original piped water supply as provided by the London Lead Company in the 19thC.

Through a gateway at Hilton
Taken at the start of a short expedition into Scordale, a walk only possible a few days each year when the military ranges are open to the public. The view is towards the conical Murton Pike.

Farmhouse at Hilton
The OS map shows a 'mill' at this point, but the village corn mill was the other side of the beck. The farmhouse and adjoining walls reflect the local geology with most of the stone being the local red Permian sandstone, but there is also a grey sandstone here [most likely Carboniferous from the nearby Pennines] and the occasional very dark stone which may well be dolerite from the Whin sill outcrops further into the hills.
