The former Workington Brewery
A brewery was established on this site in the late 18th century. It was run by the Iredale family for many years, later becoming the Workington Brewery Co., famous for its John Peel beers (Information : Workington Then & Now, RLM Byers, 2006). The brewery was taken over in 1975 by Matthew Brown, and again in the mid 1980s by Scottish and Newcastle Breweries, who fairly promptly closed it down despite assurances not to http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1988/mar/30/workington-brewery-closure . The tower and adjoining maltings (painted green) and the former wines and spirits warehouse (centre, with domed cupolas) are grade II listed buildings http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/details/default.aspx?id=72274 & http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/details/default.aspx?id=72275 . They were both converted to housing in the mid 2000s.
