Faded Grandeur
The Grand Theatre in Cockermouth looks as if it has seen better days. It now seems to be the premises of a veterinary surgeon.

Former Grand Theatre, Cockermouth
The former Grand Theatre, Cockermouth. From the sign above the door the building appears to have had a second life as a veterinary practice. The building was used as a theatre, though principally showed films, between when it was built in 1915 until 1966.

Statue of Robinson Mitchell, Cockermouth
The statue of Robinson Mitchell, Cockermouth. He is known for pioneering the modern auction system where bids are taken from buyers by an auctioneer rather than the old system of haggling between individual parties.
His statue stands on the site of the auction market he set up in 1865 which was believed to be the first purpose built livestock market in the country. The business he set up is still in existence and moved to a new out of town site in 2002. Sainsbury's then bought the site to build a supermarket and commissioned Liz Gwyther to make this statue.
The statue has since suffered from vandalism, originally the auctioneer held a gavel in his right hand and had a hand on the end of his left arm.
