The statue of Robinson Mitchell, Cockermouth. He is known for pioneering the modern auction system where bids are taken from buyers by an auctioneer rather than the old system of haggling between individual parties. His statue stands on the site of the auction market he set up in 1865 which was believed to be the first purpose built livestock market in the country. The business he set up is still in existence and moved to a new out of town site in 2002. Sainsbury's then bought the site to build a supermarket and commissioned Liz Gwyther to make this statue. The statue has since suffered from vandalism, originally the auctioneer held a gavel in his right hand and had a hand on the end of his left arm.
