New houses at Tramside Way (2011)
A housing development called Linton Grove, off Lindisfarne Street.
The homes were built on land previously occupied by Watts Storage Depot, which was established in a former railway yard. A photo taken from the same position in March 2008 shows quite a different scene

Old engine shed behind Lindisfarne Street (1)
Back of the former engine shed at London Road yard, built by the North Eastern Railway in the late 19th century. The locomotives were transferred to the Canal depot in the 1930s, but the shed yard remained in use by BR until 1963. Not long afterwards it was acquired by J & W Watt, whose business switched from mainly haulage to warehousing and storage in the mid 1980s. Around that time, additional large buildings were erected beside the older sheds.
The engine shed has three gables, and at some time during the mid 20th century the roof of the central section was taken off. It has later been replaced in a more basic style, lacking the round window and stepped brickwork seen on the gables either side.
When this picture was taken (March 2008) the shed was shortly to be demolished, and Watts Storage Depot redeveloped with housing.

Lakeland dry cleaners and London Road Stores
The cleaners occupies a building that was originally the Samson public house. Opened in 1891, it replaced an older pub with the same name. The Samson was closed down by the Carlisle State Management Scheme http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A644645 in 1917 (information from Carlisle Breweries and Public Houses 1894-1916 by S.Davidson http://www.p3publications.com/page23.htm ).

The Samson, London Road, Carlisle - March 2017 (1)
Dating from 1891 and named after a steam locomotive on the adjacent Newcastle & Carlisle Railway, this building replaced an earlier pub of the same name built circa 1837 and at one time known as the "Steam Engine". Acquired by the State Management Scheme in August 1916, it was closed in 1917 and has undergone alterations since - particularly on the ground floor (although the first floor is largely unchanged excepting addition of the window nearest the camera). It has had many different uses down the years, including a motor garage, but is now a fast food outlet.

Former tram shed, London Road
This was originally the depot for the City of Carlisle Electric Tramways Company, which started operating services in 1900. Trams in Carlisle were never financially successful, being generally regarded as noisy and slow. They were seen off by competition from motor buses - the last tram ran in November 1931. (information from "Linton Holme" by M.K. Dickens http://www.p3publications.com/PAGE6~1.HTM ).
The building curves at the back end, on Lindisfarne Street.

Former tram depot - Carlisle - August 2016
Depot of the City of Carlisle Electric Tramway, which operated between 1900 and 1931. The building has seen recent use as a garage, but has been disused for some time and now appears to be "under offer". Its future is uncertain.
