This was originally the depot for the City of Carlisle Electric Tramways Company, which started operating services in 1900. Trams in Carlisle were never financially successful, being generally regarded as noisy and slow. They were seen off by competition from motor buses - the last tram ran in November 1931. The cleaners occupies a building that was originally the Samson public house. Opened in 1891, it replaced an older pub with the same name. The Samson was closed down by the Carlisle State Management Scheme http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A644645 in 1917 (information from Carlisle Breweries and Public Houses 1894-1916 by S.Davidson http://www.p3publications.com/page23.htm ). Dating from 1891 and named after a steam locomotive on the adjacent Newcastle & Carlisle Railway, this building replaced an earlier pub of the same name built circa 1837 and at one time known as the "Steam Engine". Acquired by the State Management Scheme in August 1916, it was closed in 1917 and has undergone alterations since - particularly on the ground floor (although the first floor is largely unchanged excepting addition of the window nearest the camera). This site off London Road was the location of the first railway station in Carlisle, opened in 1836. It became a goods depot after passenger services were transferred to the Citadel Station in 1863. The two storey building on the right was the goods office, attached to a long shed or warehouse at the rear, constructed in 1881. When this picture was taken it was disused and in a poor state of repair. Down the lane, warehouses at Watts Yard can be seen on the left. J&W Watt acquired a surplus area of the railway yard in the early 1970s, originally operating a haulage business and later going in for warehousing and storage. Used cars parked either side belong to a dealer based at the old tram shed, out of sight to the left.

Opened in 1837 as the Railway Hotel, it was built to serve the London Road Station of the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlisle_London_Road_railway_station , which was just across the road. Closed as a pub since 2005, the building has planning permission for conversion to retail use on the ground floor and apartments above.

Despite the derelict condition of the premises (see: Image] ), the pub sign still hangs on the gable end.
