The yellow bikes of Melmerby (17)
At least ten more yellow bikes have now appeared in and around the village of Melmerby since my previous visit on 15th July. They have been installed in anticipation of the coming of the Aviva Tour of Britain 2015. Stage 5 of the Tour on September 10th runs from Prudhoe in the Tyne valley to the finish on Hartside Pass, the second highest A road in England. The sting in the tail is the gruelling climb on the A686 from Melmerby up to the summit, which gains 414 metres in elevation over a distance of 7.9 km.
This heavily decorated example stands in front of the celebrated village bakery and cafe.

The Village Bakery, Melmerby
Cafe with a bakery shop and crafts gallery.
The Village Bakery was created by Andrew Whitley in 1976, producing organic bread and cakes by traditional methods. The business was bought by Bells of Lazonby in the late 1990s, the brand-named products http://www.village-bakery.com are now made at their Lazonby bakery.
Information update : Bells sold the cafe in 2014, it is now run independently and is called 'The Old Village Bakery' https://www.facebook.com/cafevb .

Pedalo cycle stands at the Village Bakery, Melmerby
Yet another design of cycle stand - the Pedalo, manufactured by the German firm Erlau Outdoor Furniture. These examples are economic on footprint and material. A flexible plastic jaw grips the seat tube; a metal hoop provides an attachment point for a lock.
