The Armagh Observatory
The Armagh Observatory was founded in 1790 by Archbishop Richard Robinson in an attempt to create a university in Armagh. It is still going strong today and is an important research facility in the UK with around 25 astronomers based here. See http://star.arm.ac.uk/index.html for more information. The Armagh Planetarium Image is sited in the same grounds, but the two should not be confused.

Information panel, Armagh Observatory
It includes the following text: Founded by Archbishop Robinson in 1790 and built by architect Francis Johnston, the Observatory has a classical Georgian symmetrical design, set around a central pillar supporting the telescope and dome. The building also served as the home of the Director for two centuries. Armagh Observatory has been used for the exploration of the cosmos since its foundation, the oldest observatory continuously used for research in the British Isles.
