Gill's Almshouses, Carrickfergus
Alderman Henry Gill’s bequest was the provision of accommodation for aged men decayed in their circumstances. The houses in the photo are at Governor’s Place, Carrickfergus overlooking the Castle. They were built in 1842 to a design by Charles Lanyon. They were certainly preferable to the workhouse. For another small building by Lanyon see Image Continue to Image Image shows the houses in 1982 and Image in 1980 during restoration.
