The name Kilkeel comes from the Irish Cill Chaoil, meaning "church of the narrow place". The church, dedicated to St Colman, dates from the 14thC.

Ruined old parish church at Kilkeel
This fourteenth century church, built within a rath, was dedicated to St Colman. It was replaced in 1818 by Christ Church erected in Newry Street.
