A statue of John Mitchel at John Mitchel Place
John Mitchel (1815-75) was a controversial person, a Non-subscribing Presbyterian (Unitarian) supporter of the United Irishmen movement he was convicted of sedition and transported to Tasmania. From there he managed to flee to the USA where he became a leading advocate for the Southern cause and for the retention of slavery. In 1875 he was returned to Parliament as the MP for Tipperary but was disqualified on the grounds that he was a convicted felon.
