John Mitchel (1815-75) was a controversial person, a Non-subscribing Presbyterian (Unitarian) supporter of the United Irishmen movement he was convicted of sedition and transported to Tasmania. From there he managed to flee to the USA where he became a leading advocate for the Southern cause and for the retention of slavery.
