View across the Clanrye River in the centre of Newry
The red bricked building is the Town/City Hall. It dates from 1893 and stands on a three arched bridge astride the Clanrye/Newry River. At this point the river forms the boundary between counties Armagh and Down. Nowadays the Town Hall is often referred to as the City Hall.

The Russian Trophy, Bank Parade, Newry
This 19th century cannon captured during the Crimean War stands, ironically, outside the Polish Consulate but pointing, fortunately, upriver. It was gifted to the city in recognition of the service of the men from Newry who fought in the Crimean War. The barrel sports the Russian Eagle crest.

Posters for cross-community activities at Newry
The Feis, though basically a Nationalist event nevertheless attracts participants of both sides of the cultural divide. The Hunter Moore Memorial Flute Band is an Orange Marching Band while St Cathrine's Concert Band is Catholic. The lower ad. is for an exhibition to do with the love affair of John Mitchel and Jenny Verner, later his wife. Jenny came from a strongly Unionist background. John although Protestant, became a leader of the nationalist Young Ireland Movement. The choice of venue for the exhibition - the Riverside Reform Presbyterian Church - a strict Calvinist church tracing its roots back to the 17thC Covenanters - is interesting.
