Marcus Square, Newry
The newly refurbished shopping block, which formerly housed Woolworths has been taken over by First Derivatives plc. Newry's Catholic Cathedral forms the background.First Derivatives a billion pound business software and consultancy company was established by a local man Brian Conlon, a former Co Down GAA player. The company provides 2000 well paid jobs at Newry and Belfast. Sadly, Mr Conlon died from cancer in July 2019 at the age of 53.

A pipe band in the Ancient Order of Hibernians parade in Hill Street
The AOH is a fraternal organisation dating back to the 19thC. Membership is restricted to Catholics who are Irish or of Irish descent. It is now stronger in the US & Canada than in Ireland, where it is mainly confined to Ulster.

Bench Mark, Newry
Bolt bench mark on the northern wall of Newry Cathedral Image
It consists of a cut mark with a copper bolt driven into the wall and dates from the 1st geodetic levelling of Ireland which took place in 1839-43. The original remarks describe it as a "Newry New R.C Chapel in Hill Street. Copper bolt driven into wall at West end; 3.4 feet above centre of road" and it was originally levelled to 23.747 feet above sea level.
