Fort Street, Banbridge
Fort Street runs south, off Newry Street and was once part of the old road to Newry and Dublin Image before being replaced by today’s Newry Road. The Newry Road was part of the Belfast – Newry turnpike. This area used to be known as “The Turnpike”.

Milestone, Banbridge (1)
Milestone on the eastern side of the Newry Road, on the town side of the cemetery. McCutcheon’s “Industrial Archaeology of Northern Ireland” refers to them being “erected by the County-at-large around 1810 on the great mail coach route between Dublin and Belfast” and shows an illustration of this one Image The distance plate is missing but, if they are contemporary, then the distances would, most likely, have been in Irish miles Image
