Former social security office, Belfast (January 2008)
Back in the early 90’s Shaftesbury Square Social Security Office was damaged by a bomb. Most bomb damage was repaired quite quickly – often within days. This one, however, was not and might now be the only one of its genre left. It features pre-cast concrete panels – a fashion of the late 60‘s/early 80’s. The SSO is now in Gt Victoria Street.

Bronze figures, Belfast
When these bronze figures, by Elisabeth Frink, on the Ulster Bank in Shaftesbury Square were unveiled in the 60’s many column inches in the papers and hours on the wireless and television were devoted to discussions about them. Now, more than 40 years later, it is doubtful if anyone even notices them. The ultimate indignity, given their proximity to Queen’s University, is that they never seem to have featured in a Rag Day stunt. For a later view see

See
Image The building, seen from Fulton Street, covered in a blue mesh which is, I think, intended to stop bits of the derelict building falling into the street (and on passing people and vehicles).

Old security barrier, Donegall Pass, Belfast (May 2015)
One half of a disused security barrier at the Botanic Avenue/Shaftesbury Square end of Donegall Pass. The usual practice was for them to be closed and locked at night to prevent vehicular (but not pedestrian) access. The other half has been removed. This photograph appears as a neutral matter of record only and does not express any political or sectarian opinion.
