The Shambles, Hillsborough
Traditionally a “shambles” was a place where animals were slaughtered and sold. Whether Hillsborough’s was used for that purpose does not seem to be recorded. After falling into disrepair it was restored about 35 years ago. The part on the right was used as an open-air art gallery for a time after restoration. New houses, Hillsborough (1of3)
The site to the rear of the old Town Hall Image in Park Lane Image presents an interesting brief for any architect. The street is narrow with difficult access and has a certain architectural harmony. Further, the adjacent Main Street Image and Image has a mix of brick, stone and painted houses – many from the late 18th century. The town is regarded as an architectural and historical gem. This development (known as “Park Lane Gate”) deals admirably with the problem by having a mixed terrace along the eastern side accompanied by a courtyard at the northern end. This view (towards Park Street Image) shows most of the houses - now nearing completion. Continue to Image
