"Railway Cottages", Helen's Bay

Sykes banner signal - Helen's Bay station
When the BCDR re-signalled Holywood - Bangor in 1926, they installed equipment from W R Sykes & Co of London. The Sykes banner signal, seen in its glass case at top right, was almost unique to the BCDR with only a few isolated examples elsewhere in Ireland (see: Image] ). Signalling was semi-automatic, although could revert to local manual control at Craigavad and Helen's Bay. The small semaphore at left controlled access to the siding which can be seen behind the BCDR trespass notice. Sykes signals were replaced by Northern Ireland Railways in 1974-75.
