No 2 Chichester Street is a modest building on the corner of Callender Street. It houses an office of the Bradford & Bingley. Its claim to fame, however, lies not in the number of mortgages sold but as the first building in Belfast lit by electricity. (The clock does not work). Continue to Image

Callender Street looking from Donegall Square East to Castle Lane Image Developed before 1843 and now best known as the back entrance to Marks & Spencer Image which has a private footbridge (upper middle) connecting the shop to the delivery bay on the eastern side of the street. No 2 Chichester Street Image, formerly the Bradford & Bingley, is on the right. WH Lynn, the architect and business partner of Charles Lanyon once had his office at no 21. The spellings “Calender” and “Calandar” were also used in the past.

Former Bradford & Bingley, Belfast
Following the banking crisis of 2008 Bradford & Bingley plc became part of Santander UK plc. The Chichester Street branch has been closed and amalgamated with other branches nearby. There are now applications for planning permission (nos 0950/LBC and 0952/F) for change of use of from a bank to a coffee house/coffee shop. This photograph appears as a matter of record only and does not express any opinion, for or against, the applications.
