Welcome to the Shankill Road
WELCOME TO THE SHANKILL ROAD WE ARE PROUD · RESILIENT · WELCOMING Somewhat confusingly, this mural is not on Shankill Road but is on the wall of the Peace Line on Northumberland Street. "Welcome" appears in several languages including the Irish Gaelic Fáilte which had been omitted from earlier versions of the mural (see https://extramuralactivity.com/2019/07/22/welcome-to-the-shankill-road/#jp-carousel-23804 Extra Mural Activity).

Northumberland Street, Belfast
Northumberland Street connects the divided communities of the Falls (behind my position) and Shankill (facing) in Belfast. The two metal gates act as 'peacelines' and can be closed to prevent trouble ('minimize intercommunal sectarian violence') between the two communities. First seen as 'temporary' structures in the early 1970s, peacelines were designed to help prevent riots and to stop the easy access of sectarian murder gangs travelling between rival communities. Despite Northern Ireland entering into a period of peace and reconciliation, many peacelines still exist. See http://www.geographyinaction.co.uk/Ethnic%20Diversity/Ethnic_PeaceLines.html for more information.

The Shankill Road Mission
This Presbyterian mission was set up by the Rev. Henry Montgomery in 1869, originally in a tent, with the aim of combating irreligion, poverty and drunkeness in the Shankill. The present building dates partly from the 1898 and partly from the 1920's. Falling attendances led to its closure in 2009. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1hFQNkmYEM
