North Street, Belfast (2)
See Image (April 2008). The Peter’s Hill/Shankill end of North Street, from Winetavern Street. There was a branch of “Woolworth’s” here (it later became a “Dunne’s Stores”) but I’ve forgotten exactly where.

North Street, Belfast (detail) (1)
See Image The buildings in the previous photo once had names such as “Windsor Buildings” and “Merchants’ Buildings”. The part between Winetavern Street and Millfield was numbered 142-192 (the even numbers are on the left going out from the city centre) but I cannot say, for sure, which is which now. This lion, with a shield bearing the intertwined letters “F” and “C”, is above the ground floor on the building on the right. Continue to Image

North Street, Belfast (part)
This part of North Street Image fared badly during the “Troubles”, partly with the general decline of central Belfast and partly (I’d guess) because of its proximity to potential “flashpoints”. Now with the limbo period awaiting the extension to the Castle Court Image described in Image it has an air of something between neglect and death throes. There are three buildings here at the Peter’s Hill end. Law’s Court Image is just above the passing car on the right. Some might remember features of the street such as McMurray’s, Christies, the wee Woolies and the Elephant all of which have passed into history. The part between Winetavern Street and Millfield was numbered 142-192 (the even numbers are on the left going out from the city centre) but I cannot say, for sure, which is which now. This detail (which includes the letters “MB” – probably short for “Merchants’ Buildings”) is at roof level on the middle building. Continue to Image
