A notable feature of many Victorian buildings is the incorporation of the building date into the façade. This one is at the northern corner of Royal Avenue and Lower North Street. It also includes some typical Victorian ornamentation.

Former bus stop, Belfast
In Royal Avenue near the library Image The “gates” were the former security barriers (Image now removed) at which all pedestrians and vehicles were searched before entering the city centre. In official security-speak the city centre was called “The Segments”. Other than the emergency services only buses, delivery vehicles and those with parking spaces were allowed and then only with a Segments Pass issued by the police.
